Much of who we think we are is wrapped up in our physical appearance. Everywhere we look, there are ads and billboards, TV shows and movies filled with "perfect" beauties. Much of our time is spent maintaining our physical appearance.
Those born with "imperfect" bodies will not have known being any different. This may allow them to adjust more easily to being "different." Those who experience a sudden change caused by disease, surgery, or accident, may have a harder time. They may feel out of control and helpless. They will have to mourn their loss. They may feel unlovable. They may feel hopeless.
Physical disfigurement challenges us (and others) to look at ourselves in new ways. It pushes us to reach for who we are as human beings. It forces us to redefine how we view ourselves. This is not an easy task. It requires the support of our loved ones and may require us to get outside support.
Individual, couple, and family counseling may be helpful. But, what is reported as most helpful are self-help groups made up of people facing similar challenges. Talk to a hospital social worker or a local help line for referral to an appropriate group.
Some people choose not to use prosthetic devices, such as artificial body parts, while others decide to use them. Some people will choose reconstructive surgery, while others will not. Some will choose to use make-up, cosmetic tattooing, wigs, and specially constructed clothing, others will not. There is no right answer. Each person must decide how he or she is most comfortable. The pros and cons of all treatment options should be clear before any decisions are made.
