On behalf of University of Iowa Health Care, Jean Robillard, M.D., UI vice president for medical affairs, today extended deepest condolences to the Pomerantz family following the death of Marvin A. Pomerantz on Aug. 14.

"Marvin Pomerantz was a beloved public servant with a true devotion to the people of Iowa," Robillard said. "The Pomerantz Family Pavilion stands as just one monument to the Pomerantz family’s energy, leadership and generosity. Marvin exemplified strength of character, compassion, and visionary thinking—coupled with a tireless dedication to serve human needs."

A prominent Des Moines businessman and state leader who generously supported health care and higher education at the UI, Pomerantz died at age 78 Thursday at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Pomerantz was a UI alumnus who had twice served as president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. Among his many contributions was a family gift toward a major capital replacement program at UI Hospitals and Clinics, which led to the construction and naming of the Pomerantz Family Pavilion. He had also supported the UI Tippie College of Business and other University programs, including the Pomerantz Career Center.

Pomerantz also endowed the Pomerantz Family Chair in Ophthalmology and the John W. Colloton Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine in the UI Carver College of Medicine, as well as the Marvin A. and Rose Lee Pomerantz Chair in the UI College of Public Health.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 924 Polk Blvd. in Des Moines, with burial following. Lunch will be served at the synagogue following burial. There is no visitation.
