Department of Internal Medicine: Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine

  • Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program. Supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation the Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Center and Treatment Development provides comprehensive management of adults with CF and participation in early phase trials for novel CF focused therapies.
  • Bronchoscopy and Procedures Service. Full range of diagnostic and interventional procedures including:
    • airway management including lasers, stents, cryotherapy
    • balloon bronchoplasty
    • brachytherapy
    • clinical trials such as bronchoscopic lung reduction for emphysema
    • fluoroscopy
    • pleuroscopy and other pleural procedures
    • video-bronchoscopy
    • virtual analytical bronchoscopy
  • General Pulmonary Division. Assistance and consultation on all aspects of care for adult patients with suspected or diagnosed pulmonary disease.
  • Interstitial Lung Disease Service. Provides assistance for the diagnosis and therapy of a variety of different lung diseases.
  • Lung Cancer. An interdisciplinary team of pulmonary physicians, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and thoracic surgical oncologists provides evaluation, therapy, and long term follow-up with airway management (endobronchial brachytherapy, laser resections, cryotherapy, stent placement) and rehabilitation to patients with lung cancer.
  • Medical Intensive Care. Provides comprehensive medical care for all critically ill patients and specializes in removing difficult-to-wean patients from mechanical ventilation.
  • Occupational Medicine Consultation Service. Evaluates medical problems arising from occupational and environmental exposures and provides medical recommendations and occupational and environmental interventions that assist in the treatment of individuals with these diseases.
  • Pulmonary Function/Exercise Laboratory. Provides spirometry (with/without bronchodilator response), lung volumes, diffusion, arterial blood gas analysis, histamine bronchial provocation challenge, shunt fraction measurement, altitude simulation to evaluate oxygen requirements during plane travel, respiratory muscle strength measurements, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, exercise induced asthma evaluation and laryngoscopy during exercise to evaluate exercise induced upper airway dysfunction.
  • Pulmonary HypertensionService. Uses a multidisciplinary approach for comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and treatment for patients with pulmonary hypertension from any cause.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service. Multidisciplinary specialists help patients with respiratory diseases reach their maximal level of function and independence and promote a healthy lifestyle.
  • Smoking Cessation Service. Combines education by nurses trained in smoking cessation techniques with pharmacologic treatment when indicated.
  • Steroid-Dependent Asthma Clinic. Provides a thorough, multi-disciplinary evaluation of resistant, steroid-dependent, and otherwise difficult-to-treat asthmatics. This may be arranged on a consultative basis, or patients may be referred for long-term follow-up.
  • Tuberculosis/Pulmonary Infections Clinic. Serves patients with:
    • bronchiectasias (non-cystic fibrosis)
    • nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary infections
    • pulmonary tuberculosis
    • unusual or chronic fungal infections (histoplasmosis, aspergillus, etc), as well as other pulmonary infections are evaluated by specialists with input from a clinical pharmacy specialist.
