Department of Internal Medicine: Hematology-Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplantation

• Bone Marrow transplant Services. Include allogeneic and autologous hemopoietic stem cell transplantation services for adult patients with lympho-hemopoietic diseases, tumors of the breast, ovary, testes, and soft tissue sarcoma.
• Developmental Therapeutics. Patients with either hematologic malignancies or solid tumors can receive investigational drugs or new combinations of currently approved drugs through the clinical component of this research program. Treatment typically occurs in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
• General Hematology Service. Provides care for patients with:
  • anemias
  • aplastic anemia myeloma
  • general coagulation disorders
  • HIV-related blood problems
  • macroglobulinemia
  • neutropenias
  • thrombocytopenias
  • various other hematologic disorders

  Staff members are available to discuss hemophilia, leukemias, myelodysplastic syndromes, and lymphoma as an alternative to the specialty services for those disorders listed above.

• Hemoglobinopathies. A joint venture between both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, the comprehensive care clinic serves adult and pediatric patients with hemoglobin abnormalities, such as sickle cell anemia and the thalassemias.
• Hemophilia Service. The Great Plains Regional Comprehensive Hemophilia Center cares for adult and pediatric patients with hereditary bleeding disorders in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. The clinics have a full range of standard and investigational clinical and diagnostic services, including physical therapy, dentistry, and social services.
• Leukemia Service. Cares for patients with acute and chronic leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. Treatment emphasizes the latest chemotherapy using standard and experimental approaches. As a member of Cancer and Leukemia Group B, this service can offer investigational drugs. Immunotherapy and hematologic supportive care are emphasized.
• Lung Cancer Service. Provides multidisciplinary care and access to clinical trials for patients with all forms of cancer within the thorax. Specialists in medical oncology, thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, and radiation oncology participate.
• Lymphoma Service. Patients with lymphoid malignancies can receive a full range of consultative services. Treatment is provided at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or, by special arrangement, can be administered by the referring physician. Treatment options include a broad range of innovative investigational protocols for patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed/refractory lymphomas of all grades.
• Neurooncology Service. This multidisciplinary consultation service provides standard and investigational treatments for patients with primary and metastatic central nervous system tumors.
• Palliative Care and Cancer Pain Management. This inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary consultation service provides symptom-directed management for patients with advanced disease.
• Solid Tumor Service. This service provides diagnosis, treatment planning, and administration of chemotherapy and immunotherapy for patients with cancers such as:
  • breast
  • colon
  • gastrointestinal
  • gynecologic
  • head and neck
  • lung
  • sarcoma
  • urologic

  Patient care is planned and given in coordination with surgeons and radiation oncologists as part of a multidisciplinary team. The solid tumor service can provide care under clinical trial protocols (many sponsored by the National Cancer Institute) when appropriate and in the patient’s best interests.
