Kids’ Kidney Stones
Specialists with University of Iowa Children’s Hospital say they are seeing more children with crystalluria, a precursor to kidney stones, which mirrors a national trend. The cause is a combination of taking in too much salt and too few fluids.
Cancer and Stress
A research team with Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa found that patients diagnosed with ovarian cancer who reported higher levels of social support and lower stress levels also had decreased amounts of bodily chemicals associated with the growth of tumors.
Skin Protection
Specialists at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics say dry winter conditions can cause skin problems for some people, but simple preventive steps can help.
Shopping Spree
Patients at UI Children’s Hospital will benefit from a special shopping expedition sponsored by Aiming for a Cure at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, at the Coralville, Iowa, Wal-Mart Super Center. A pair of pediatric cancer patients will use a $5,000 donation to purchase holiday gifts for their peers.
Prostate Study
Researchers with University of Iowa Health Care are enrolling men age 45 and older with benign prostatic hyperplasia—also known as prostate enlargement—in a research study comparing the safety and effectiveness of saw palmetto (a plant extract) to placebo (inactive substance) in reducing symptoms.
