Scholarships

Volunteer Services sponsors several scholarship programs:

Graduating Senior Volunteer Scholarship
Graduating high school seniors who have been accepted by an accredited college or university and have volunteered a minimum of 100 hours with us are eligible for scholarships ranging from $300 to $500. These scholarships are funded by earnings from the Wild Rose Gifts, Fourth Floor Salon, Rooftop Café, and food carts.

Guy L. Harris Memorial Scholarship
The graduating high school senior who accumulates the most hours of volunteer service at UI Hospitals and Clinics also receives the Guy L. Harris Memorial scholarship, in the amount of an additional $200. The special scholarship is made possible from contributions made in memory of lifetime volunteer Guy Harris.

Andrew W. Burchett College Student Leader Award
Any member of the College Student Leader Board with senior status who has contributed 150 volunteer hours with our program is eligible for this $500 scholarship named after our first Student Leader Board chairperson.

Members of the College Student Leader Board recruit, orient, and schedule student volunteers at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Students are honored for their outstanding leadership and service through these scholarships funded by earnings from the Wild Rose Gifts, Fourth Floor Salon, and Rooftop Café and carts, all providing services to patients, visitors and staff at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Densen Family Scholarship
The chairperson of the College Student Leader Board receives an additional scholarship of $750 to be applied to their University of Iowa account. Made possible by a gift from Peter and Ellie Densen, this award offers special recognition for the student who earns our highest leadership role.

Norma Adams Scholarship
Norma Adams, RN, was the director of Volunteer Services from 1973 until her death in 1981. The scholarship was established in 1981 to memorialize and honor her unique contributions by assisting and encouraging University of Iowa students in health care fields.

All recipients must be Iowans, have demonstrated promise of high achievement in their chosen profession, and possess qualities of character and personality which will enhance those skills.

Each year a junior or senior from the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and the College of Dentistry are each awarded $2,000.
