Baby Hats

Volunteers knit or crochet baby hats for each and every newborn at our hospital. Over 1,500 hats per year are needed, all are provided at no charge and patterns are listed below. Directions to make caps:

KNITTED CAP
USE SIZE 6 NEEDLES. CAST ON 30 STITCHES

PATTERN: (KNIT ONE ROW, PURL ONE ROW, KNIT ONE ROW.)
REPEAT 24 TIMES (72 ROWS TOTAL). BIND OFF

WITH YARN NEEDLE, DRAW ONE LONG EDGE OF KNITTING TOGETHER. SEW SHORT EDGES TOGETHER AND ADD POMPON ON TOP.

CROCHETED CAP
USE G CROCHET HOOK. CHAIN 34, THEN TURN.

SINGLE CROCHET IN EACH CHAIN, STARTING WITH SECOND CHAIN FROM HOOK. MAKE 33 STITCHES.

CHAIN ONE, TURN, SINGLE CROCHET IN EACH STITCH ACROSS, ALWAYS PICKING UP BACK LOOP OF THE STITCH. THIS WILL MAKE A RIB EFFECT.

WHEN PIECE MEASURES ABOUT 11 INCHES HIGH AND AT LEAST 7 INCHES WIDE, SLIPSTITCH TOGETHER.

DRAW TOGETHER TO MAKE TOP AND POMPON.
