The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provides health and prescription coverage through participating providers from the Alliance Select network.
The plan provides coverage for hospitalizations, surgery, maternity, well child care (to age 7), emergency care, medically necessary physician care, prescription drugs and mental health. Routine physicals, gynecological exams, immunizations over age 7, dental check-ups and eye exams are not covered.
Deductibles, co-insurance and co-payments depend on the type of health care service needed and if the provider participates with the Alliance Select Network. There is a $1,500 maximum benefit limit per year for outpatient services and a $1,000 out-of-pocket maximum per hospital stay.
Mental Health and Chemically Dependency
Benefit coverage is available for services with any of the following mental health providers: psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed social worker or advanced registered nurse practitioner. For the least amount of out-of pocket expense, students should seek services with an Alliance-Select participating provider.
A confidential assessment and up to 10 visits can be obtained at no charge to the student by calling the University Counseling Service at 319-335-7294. Counselors can assist students with needs, help resolve the problem, or facilitate a referral to a provider based on the assessment.
Prescriptions
A convenient Student Health Service Pharmacy is located on the West Lawn campus. All pharmacies in the Iowa City/Coralville/North Liberty area participate in the SHIP plan. For plan participants living outside this area, check pharmacy locations. Certain drugs are limited per month, benefit period, or lifetime by drug-specific quantity limitations. The limitations are determined by Wellmark based on Medical necessity. For a list of drugs subjects and quantity limitations, check with your pharmacist, physician or Wellmark.
Important features of SHIP include:
- Open access to participating providers with the Alliance Select network.
- Prescription card benefits with no deductible requirement.
- Nurse case managers within the UI Health Plans Office to assist you with health care needs.
- Assistance from the UI Health Plans Office staff with questions about benefits, claims and general information or concerns. Call 319-356-8442 or 800-356-8442.
