How To Choose a Doctor

Choosing a primary care physician is a personal decision, and the relationship you develop over your lifetime is important. There are many factors to consider when finding the doctor that is right for you. Discussing your expectations, interests, and needs will help guide your choice. Here are some questions to consider:

Background and Training

  • Where did they attend medical school?
  • Where did they complete their residency?
  • Are they board certified?
  • What is their area of expertise?
  • How do they stay up-to-date with the ever-changing world of medicine?
  • How do they handle consultation with and referral to other physicians?
  • What hospital are they connected with?

Communication and Personal Skills

  • Do you feel comfortable talking with them, especially about personal issues?
  • Do they listen to your concerns and take them seriously?
  • Are they able to explain illnesses and medical treatments in a way you understand?
  • Do they answer all your questions?

Clinic

  • Are they conveniently located?
  • Is it easy to schedule appointments?
  • Is the staff friendly?
  • What assistance is available after hours?
  • Is the doctor/clinic covered by your insurance plan?
