At University of Iowa Children's Hospital, we recognize that when a child is ill or injured, there is nothing more comforting to that child than a family. We fully embrace the philosophy of Family Centered care, making families true partners in their children's health care.
We are committed to keeping you informed of every aspect of your child's care and progress as well as involving you in decisions about that care.
Our family-centered partnership includes:
- Accommodations in most nursing units for a family member to room-in with a child.
- Policies that identify family members as part of the caregiving team, not as "visitors."
- Resources for family support, such as social services, patient representatives, interpreters, and pastoral care.
- A Hospital Tutoring Program for preschool through 12th grade, with a certified teacher who assists students (late-August to early-June) in continuing their educations.
- Child Life programming to meet the emotional and developmental needs of children and family members.
- A dedicated children's television channel, with commercial-free, non-violent, and non-discriminatory programming.
- A Family Suite with 16 guest rooms for family members of children hospitalized at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
- A Family Advisory Council and a Youth Advisory Council.
- A Patient's Library and Family Resource Center with an extensive collection of materials for children and adults as well as health information and computer access to the internet.
- Family and Youth Advisory Councils and support groups.
- Fully accessible outdoor play court with age- and developmentally-appropriate play spaces.
