Cancer that spreads from the area of the body that it began to grow (primary site) to another area of the body is called metastatic cancer. Nearly all cancers have the potential to spread to other areas of the body. The cancer spreads in one of three ways:
- Local extensionfrom the tumor to the surrounding tissue
- Through the blood stream to distant sites
- Through the lymph systemto neighboring or distant lymph nodes.
Each kind of cancerous tumor has a usual route that it spreads. The more common sites of metastatic spread are lung, liver, brain and bone.
