The esophagus is the tube that carries food and liquid from the back of the throat into the stomach. Esophageal cancer is a treatable and sometimes curable disease. It is somewhat uncommon, making up less than 1 % of all cancers. There are two types of cancer that affect the esophagus, adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma begins in the glands of the esophagus. Squamous cell begins in the cells that line the esophagus.
