Acute lymphocytic leukemia accounts for 20-25 percent of all acute leukemia in adults, but is the most frequent type of acute leukemia in children. Chemotherapy is the central form of therapy and the success rate is higher in children than adults.

Treatment is generally given for at least two years total and must include some form of therapy to eliminate leukemic cells from the brain, spinal cord and gonads where they can "hide" from therapy.
