Adult Blood and
Marrow Transplantation Program

The Adult Blood and Marrow Transplantion Program in the Division of Hematology-Oncology offers aggressive treatment of malignant hematologic neoplasms, bone marrow failure syndromes, lymphoma (Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's), and solid tumors. All patient care adheres to approved protocols which are either unique to the UI Hospitals and Clinics or are part of ongoing national cooperative group studies. At the time of the initial referral, the primary goal is to outline a definitive treatment strategy for each patient. In addition, the patient is interviewed by a Social Service staff member to begin obtaining pre-authorization from the insurance company for proceeding with a bone marrow transplant. Subsequent to the initial medical evaluation, other members of the Bone Marrow Transplant Team, including the hematopathologist, surgical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and staff members from the Bone Marrow Donor Program, are consulted as necessary to provide the best treatment.

Services include a highly specialized bone marrow transplant unit with single accommodations designed for optimal protection of severely immunosuppressed patients. Hospital epidemiology specialists monitor not only inpatient rooms, but also the hallway in the Transplant Unit and the route patients take to and from the transplant unit when they are hospitalized. Radiation oncologists provide services for patients who require total body radiation before their bone marrow transplant. A social worker specializes in serving bone marrow transplant patients before, during, and after transplant. This person works closely with family members to locate appropriate accommodations for them while the patient is hospitalized on the transplant unit. A dietitian works with patients through the transplant process, especially following the procedure when resumption of a normal diet can be difficult. Dental specialists evaluate all patients before transplant and continue their care during the time of transplantation and throughout their hospital stay.
