Armstrong, Kerry, Weiner Testify at
Senate Field Hearing on Cancer

More than 600 people attended the U.S. Senate field hearing on "Winning the Race Against Cancer" Friday, July 28 at the University of Iowa Memorial Union to hear cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong say "Today, our goal - our mission - must be to re-double our efforts until cancer is truly a chronic disease that you can live with, rather than die from."

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies field hearing, was chaired by Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and featured Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, also a cancer survivor. The hearing was organized to promote the advancement of cancer research in light of President Bush's nearly $40 million dollar cut for the National Cancer Institute for fiscal year 2007.

George Weiner, MD, director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UI, also testified at the hearing, discussing cancer deaths in Iowa, and the impact cancer research, detection, and treatment have made over the past several years. Weiner's own research focuses on developing new approaches to using the immune system to treat lymphoma.

In addition, Gary Streit, past-chairman of the American Cancer Society, and three-time cancer survivor and Gazette cancer columnist Shirley Ruedy, also testified.
