Assistant Vice President for Compliance, Accreditation, and UI Privacy Officer

Debbie Thoman was named Assistant Vice President for Compliance, Accreditation, and UI Privacy Officer in September 2008. She will direct the overall administration and provision of services, programs, and staff functions for the compliance and accreditation activities for UI Health Care. She will also direct activities related to programs and functions as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Officer for The University of Iowa.

She joined UI Hospitals and Clinics in 1977 as a student employee in the Medical Records Department and has assumed positions of progressive responsibility including Director of Health Information Management and most recently Senior Assistant Director, Compliance/Privacy Officer, Joint Office for Compliance. Thoman is a past president of the Iowa Health Information Management Association and former chair of the American Health Information Management Association Legislative Committee that helped draft language for HIPAA. She is certified in Health Care Privacy and is currently a senior examiner for the Baldrige National Quality Program.
