Honors and Recognition

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is consistently recognized as a leader in medicine, from the care we give, the research we do, to the students we teach. Many of our distinctions are firsts and onlys in the profession.

Several national publications and organizations regularly recognize UI Hospitals and Clinics in a variety of categories. The following rankings, certifications, and awards are just a few of the honors received.

UI Hospitals and Clinics has received the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval, indicating UI Hospitals and Clinics is in full compliance with all applicable Joint Commission standards.

UI Hospitals and Clinics is consistently recognized by U.S.News & World Report as one of the nation's best hospitals, with many of its clinical specialties ranked among the best.

UI Hospitals and Clinics was the first in the state to receive the Magnet designation for excellence in nursing practice from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. In 2008, the hospital is the first Magnet facility in Iowa to be redesignated.

More than 270 of our physicians are included in the Best Doctors in America database.

University of Iowa Children's Hospital is named one of the top 20 children’s hospitals in the U.S. by Child magazine.

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa is the only cancer center in Iowa designated as “comprehensive” by the National Cancer Institute. Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center was named a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa. University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Breast Imaging Center is designated by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

The UI Burn Treatment Center is the only verified burn center in Iowa by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons and by the American Burn Association.

UI Hospitals and Clinics is certified as a Level I Trauma Center with pediatric commitment, the highest designation possible, by the American College of Surgeons.

UI Hospitals and Clinics, earned the Gold Seal of Approval^TM from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers.

UI Obesity Surgery was named a Blue Distinction Center by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa.

UI Obesity Surgery has been named an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Center of Excellence®.
