2006-2007 Annual Report
Setting the Standard in Stroke Care
The expertise that helped University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics earn prestigious recognition as a Primary Stroke Center saved a 53-year-old nurse from Davenport, Iowa. Kathy Downey, RN, received urgent stroke care in March, 2007, shortly after being airlifted from Davenport. Her UI stroke care team safely administered the powerful clot-busting drug, tPA, despite the complications of parathyroid surgery a day earlier. Today, Downey is recovering well and back to being a nurse. The UI Stroke Center earned recognition from the Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers in February 2007. The designation affirms that UI's stroke team follows national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve stroke patient outcomes. Harold Adams, MD, a leading stroke expert, says the Commission's Gold Seal of ApprovalTM offers further reassurance that UI Hospitals and Clinics offers many advantages to stroke patients, including the newest treatments and research protocols not available at many hospitals.
